When to Go & How to See Alaska’s Northern Lights by Rail

Experience Alaska’s magical winter by pairing Northern Lights viewing with the Aurora Winter Train. Aurora season runs late August through April; your best odds are 9 pm–3 am, with activity often stronger near the equinoxes. Plan 3–5 nights to ride out clouds and maximize chances. Link Anchorage, Talkeetna, and Fairbanks for long, dark skies and easy daytime touring.
